Right to Life/Abortion
My personal belief is that abortion is the death of an unborn child, in every instance. However, if we attempt to stop the practice completely and instantaneously, we will be met with harsh resistance and will likely be defeated in the courts, as they move to uphold Roe v Wade. Our goal has to be to overturn Roe v Wade, but we need to recognize the reality of the situation. Leftist doctrine has infested our schools and culture, in a pervasive manner. Young women are taught today that the child living within them has no value, and is nothing more than a lump of cells, like cancer. It is this pervasive indoctrination that leads to fundamental misunderstandings. We will not be successful in overturning Roe v Wade unless the culture has time to adapt to a new structure which should inspire the masses to re-think, and re-learn concepts like the value of human life. Then we should have sufficient support legally, ideologically, and culturally to overturn Roe v Wade and re-establish a new set of laws and guidelines. I think we are at least 10 years away from that becoming our reality. Therefore, I am in favor of incremental change over time. Starting with ending the barbaric practice of late-term abortion.
Legislatively, I support banning abortion AFTER the first trimester of pregnancy except in the cases of life of the mother, rape, and incest. To be specific, the legislation I plan to author would not restrict abortions in the first trimester. Second trimester abortions would be banned except in the cases of rape, incest, or life of the mother. Abortions in the third trimester would be outlawed except in extreme emergencies where the life of the mother is undoubtedly threatened, and confirmed by a medical doctor. I view this position largely as a compromise, one that would survive the Supreme Court of the United States and be considered lawful within the Roe v. Wade precedent. A plan like this could be passed as federal law, through legislation in congress. With this new law, we could begin to walk back much of the cultural indoctrination that has led to massive increases in the number of abortions performed in the United States. Which leads to walking back much of this radical Leftist philosophy behind abortion over time. That is the real victory, to change the culture over time to better reflect America's commitment to the preservation of human life. Only then, our country might be ready for us to re-evaluate the Roe v. Wade precedent.
I also believe no federal dollars should never go to pay for any abortions. All federal funding to organizations like Planned Parenthood should be cut from the budget. The money that goes to these abortion providers should be repurposed to women's healthcare providers that offer prenatal healthcare services and that do not offer abortions or abortion referrals.
